Birding Information
Numerous waterfowl species seek the protected bay of the harbor and the nearshore areas including red-breasted mergansers, common goldeneyes, buffleheads and trumpeter swans. Double-crested cormorants are easily viewed diving in and around the harbor while a spotting scope would be helpful in observing species hanging out in deeper waters beyond the rock break wall. Search the tag alder and Michigan holly stands for cedar waxwings, common redpolls and soras. The conifers along the road edges could provide feeding habitats for nuthatches and kinglets.
Area Information
Naubinway began as a lumbering community in 1880 and benefitted from being a port community and sported a large commercial fishing industry. The community is now referred to as the "Top of the Lake," as the northernmost point of Lake Michigan. The Naubinway area offers some local cuisine with a pasty and fudge shop as well as an opportunity to visit the Top-of-the Lake Snowmobile Museum located in town and open year-round.
